Salinity (salinity of water) is the concentration of dissolved salts dissolved in water. Salinity is usually measured in units of parts per thousand (ppt) or %. In general, salinity levels can be divided according to salinity as follows:

Fresh water will have a measured salinity in the range 0 – 0.5 ppt.
Brackish water will have a measurable salinity in the range 0.5 – 30 ppt.
Saltwater will have a salinity higher than 30 ppt.

1 ppt = 1,000 ppm = 1,000 mg/L = 0.1 %
